MUSIC APPRECIATION 101 - Part Three: Saving the Best for Last!

by Kristin Scheimer

So, before dismissing Classical Music as “bougie” or something to put you to sleep, maybe give it a chance.  Do a little Music Appreciation on your own.

Youtube is a great resource.

Also check out KUSC.org.

Or you could simply start with the original 1940s Disney Film “Fantasia”

or virtually any Warner Bros. cartoon, all of which employ actual Classical Music pieces as their soundtracks.

And now…  here is my own list of Classical Music pieces I’d like you to give a listen.

This first one you may recognize from several movie trailers.  It’s actually Carl Orff’s “O Fortuna” from “Carmina Burana”

Next, the very famous first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

And the first movement from one of my favorite piano concerto’s by Edvard Grieg.  His Concerto in A minor.  (if you make it all the way to the end, it’s quite dramatic)

A favorite, more contemporary sounding piano piece, George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”.

The great Yo Yo Ma playing J. S. Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major: The Prelude.

And finally, possibly one of the most well-known pieces of Classical Music, Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” (this is for my friend Michael Basic)

And with that ends my version of Music Appreciation 101.  Thanks for listening and I hope you were pleasantly surprised!
